Winter Night Shelter Volunteer Shift Leader

A shelter shift only works when someone brings the team together, makes sure everyone knows what to do, and keeps the night running smoothly. That’s the role of a Shift Leader.

What you’ll do

You’ll be the point person for your shift – welcoming volunteers, giving a clear briefing, and keeping things running safely and calmly.
Depending on whether you’re leading an evening, overnight, or morning shift, your responsibilities include:

  • Giving a safety and information briefing at the start of the shift.
  • Allocating tasks to volunteers and making sure everyone feels supported.
  • Checking in with the Night Shelter Coordinator (if on site) and passing on updates.
  • Recording key notes in the action log and handing over to the next shift leader.
  • Making sure health, safety, and safeguarding are looked after.
  • Ensuring the premises are left clean and secure.
  • If needed, liaising with the Coordinator (by phone if off-site) to make difficult decisions.

What we’re looking for

We’ll invite people who show they’re ready for leadership to step into this role, and you can also let us know if you’d like to be considered.
If you’re organised, calm under pressure, and good at bringing people together, this could be you.

Training and support

You’ll receive specialist training before you lead a shift, plus ongoing support from staff. This includes:

  • General winter night shelter training (in person) PLUS the extra Shift leader session at the end.
  • Food allergen training (online)
