Winter Night Shelter Volunteer Cook

A hot meal at the end of the day is one of the things our guests look forward to most — and you’ll be the person who makes it happen. As a Cook, you’ll work with an Assistant Cook and volunteers to prepare and serve a two-course evening meal (with vegetarian options and any allergies taken into account) for around 22 people — including guests, volunteers, and staff.

What you’ll do

Plan meals and shop for ingredients.
Prepare and cook the evening meal (you can do some prep at home if easier).
Supervise the Assistant Cook and any helping volunteers.
Liaise with the Shift Leader about timings and service.
Clean the kitchen after meals, store or dispose of leftovers properly.
Keep basic records such as food temperatures and storage checks, and complete the daily food log for the Shift Leader or Coordinator (if on site).

Training and support

  • Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety: All Cooks will either already hold, or be trained to gain, a Level 2 Food Hygiene & Safety qualification (an online course that takes a couple of hours). We’ll cover this with you so you feel confident and equipped.
  • Food allergen training (online)
  • Plus our general training that all volunteers whether new or retuning need to attend.
