Info on diverted giving scheme in Wycombe town centre
A new diverted giving scheme has launched in Wycombe town centre. The idea is instead of giving money to people who are begging, a person might be moved to tap and donate to a local organisation, in this case our friends and partners at Oasis Partnership. They have a specialty in helping people who are struggling with complex issues including addiction that can contribute to them begging for money.
We hope the scheme will mean Oasis can continue to help vulnerable people who beg, many of whom often wrestle with addiction and need compassion and understanding alongside and tailored support which we know Oasis with their expertise in this particular area will be able to provide.
Wycombe Homeless Connection is also here to offer help, hope and advice to anyone who is homeless or facing homelessness in Wycombe and across the whole of south Buckinghamshire.
The impact of street homelessness is devastating, long-lasting and complex and we strongly believe it is important for the public to understand that in many cases, people who are begging are not homeless and not everyone who is homeless is struggling with addiction. Did you know people who are street homeless are 17 times more likely to be the victim of anti-social behavior than a person who has a home?
If someone asks you for money, you should know that all local emergency accommodation for people who are found to be homeless is free; there is no charge at all, no nightly fees or deposits. All our services are free, always.
If you are worried about someone you think is homeless, there are things you can do. Importantly, if you think the person is under 18, or in immediate danger you should call 999. If you are concerned about any other adult you believe is sleeping rough you can tell them about us.
Our Support Centre on Castle Street is open weekday mornings and people can reach us via our website and our homelessness helpline on 01494 447699.
You can also report where you have seen them on an app called Streetlink or call them on 0300 500 0914. Reports will be passed to local organisations like us and the person will be connected to support.
