Maria’s story: Overcoming obstacles
For many of the people we serve, a housing crisis isn’t the only challenge they are facing. Here, Maria* tells her own story about how our Homelessness Prevention Team supported her and her family when they were facing losing their home.
“My husband became disabled after unsuccessful surgery which meant that our home was no longer suitable for his needs. His Occupational Therapist said we needed level access shower and ramps but while we looked for a new place to live, our landlord sold our home. The new owner issued a possession claim, putting pressure on an already difficult situation.
We applied for an adapted house through the council. We needed a two bedroom property as we rely on our son who assists with all kinds of daily tasks, including helping my husband move around. He helps him to the bathroom and to shower. If my husband was to have a fall I wouldn’t be able to lift him on my own.
Because our son doesn’t live with us all of the time they offered us a smaller house which just didn’t work.
We were confused and upset. We provided more documents and explained our situation, but it wasn’t working.
That’s when I reached out to Wycombe Homeless Connection for help. Sandra took on our case and fought tirelessly, demonstrating to the council why we needed a two-bedroom home.
Finally, we were offered what we needed!
I’m immensely grateful to Sandra and the homelessness prevention team for their dedication and support.
Sandra’s unwavering dedication and fierce advocacy truly made a world of difference to me and my family. Her relentless efforts and genuine compassion showed us that she truly cares about helping others. Sandra’s commitment to ensuring our needs were met goes above and beyond, and her remarkable determination is something to be celebrated.
I’m incredibly grateful for her support and the positive impact she has had on our lives.”
We are so pleased that Maria and her family are now settled in accommodation that is suitable for their needs and can now focus on providing the care that her husband needs.
