Huw's Shelter Story
On a cold February morning, Huw came to our Support Centre in need of help.
Huw had experienced a relationship breakdown and with nowhere else to go had been sleeping on the street near the bus station in Aylesbury.
Our partners at Aylesbury Homeless Action Group told Huw about our winter night shelter and he got the bus to Wycombe. Our Support Worker Hope leapt into action and that same evening Huw was in our night shelter. He told us
“Everything was made easy for me. All I had to do was turn up.”
Huw spent four weeks in the shelter, each night enjoying the company of our volunteers. He had hot meals, received fresh clothes, got his laundry done and had hot showers.
Our support team worked with Huw, helping him understand his rights and options. A big hurdle for Huw leaving homelessness behind was that he wasn’t able to access Universal Credit which made paying for a home impossible.
Pulling in additional expertise from our partners at Connection Support, we helped Huw to appeal what we thought was an unfair decision by the DWP to refuse his benefit claim and it worked! Huw now receives Universal Credit and is happily settled in his new home in Aylesbury. Huw said:
“I’d like to thank you for your help and for the shelter over the past four weeks... Would you kindly thank on my behalf all the volunteers at each of the shelters for their work and their kindness towards me and tell them I’ve enjoyed meeting them all.”
Please give so we can help find a safe place to live for more people like Huw at our Winter Night Shelter in January - March 2026!
