A fresh start for Alek
Alek never thought he would end up losing everything. He had a thriving business, was happily married and enjoying life. Things were going well, then COVID-19 hit, work dried up and he dipped into his savings to help pay his employees, but this wasn’t sustainable and his staff moved on.
Alek’s business was part of his identity and now it was gone, along with his savings. The responsibility of providing for his family weighed heavily. Sadly, he started drinking to take the edge off and as his alcohol dependency increased his marriage fell apart.
Alek helped his family to find a place to live, but he became homeless. He was able to rely on the kindness of friends who let him sleep on their sofa, but he knew he wouldn’t be able to do that for long. It was then that Alek heard about Wycombe Homeless Connection and in desperation he got in touch.
We worked closely with Alek and his NHS social prescriber, a person who is dedicated to helping people improve their health and wellbeing, and he worked hard to reduce his alcohol consumption.
Throughout, WHC were a listening ear and were able to explain his housing options. We helped him to fill in the intimidating pile of documents required to claim the benefits he was entitled to.
It has taken a long time, but Alek is finally in safe and secure accommodation and is working on rebuilding his life. We are so pleased to have been able to bring help and hope to Alek in his darkest hours.
